Everyone’s favourite hedging plant, Buxus sempervirens (English Box or Common Box), is the perfect way to formalise any garden – and that’s exactly why it was high up on our Bayside project planting list.
Perfect for formal evergreen hedging, borders, topiary, screening and general garden planting, there are several varieties of Buxus to suit your planting requirements. The most popular of the Buxus varieties – the English Box or Common Box – are slower growing than others, but require less maintenance. They grow to 30-40cm in three years and thrive in pots and containers. Although shade and frost tolerant, they prefer a sunny, open position in moist, well drained soil. Pruning and shaping may need to be done several times during growing season (spring/summer). It’s important to water them regularly after planting until established. But be careful not to overwater, as Buxus do not like too much water, or soggy soil and remember to feed them in Autumn/Spring with a complete fertiliser.
